Magnetic Mixing for Hazardous Locations

The HazLo XP-Rated Stir Plate was developed specifically for applications where conventional laboratory equipment is not appropriate for the classified environment.

Rather than treating the stirrer as a standalone component, the system integrates the magnetic drive, electrical controls, enclosure, purge system, grounding, electrical connections, and operator interface into a complete hazardous-location solution.

Key Features

  • Class I, Division 1, Group D, T5 configuration

  • Type X purge and pressurization

  • Up to 50 L mixing capacity

  • Type 4X stainless-steel enclosure

  • External ON/OFF and variable-speed controls

  • Automatic power disconnect upon loss of required purge pressure

  • Hazardous-location-rated electrical connections

  • Grounding and bonding provisions

  • Designed for stationary process installations

Built for Classified Process Environments

External operator controls allow convenient adjustment of mixing speed while maintaining the integrity of the protected enclosure.

The magnetic drive is integrated within the stainless-steel enclosure and couples to the mixing vessel above. Mixing speed is controlled externally, allowing the operator to adjust agitation while maintaining the integrity of the protected system.

This provides the simplicity of magnetic stirring in an engineered configuration designed specifically for hazardous-location applications.

Type X-Purge Protection

The HazLo XP-Rated Stir Plate uses Type X purge and pressurization as its protection method for operation in the specified Class I, Division 1 environment.

Before operation, protective gas purges the electrical enclosure. Positive pressure is then maintained to help prevent the surrounding hazardous atmosphere from entering the protected enclosure.

The purge system monitors enclosure pressure throughout operation.

Automatic protection if purge pressure is lost

If the required purge pressure is lost, the system is designed to automatically disconnect electrical power within the protected enclosure.

This integrated approach allows magnetic stirring and electrical controls to operate as part of a system engineered for the classified area.

Designed for Solvent-Handling Processes

The HazLo XP-Rated Stir Plate is well suited for pharmaceutical and bioprocess applications involving ethanol, solvents, and other flammable materials, including mixing operations performed within laboratory fume hoods and cleanroom environments.

Similar requirements can occur anywhere flammable liquids or vapors are present during mixing or process operations.

Potential applications include:

  • Pharmaceutical solvent preparation

  • Ethanol-based formulations

  • Formulation development

  • Solvent-handling processes

  • Laboratory and pilot-scale mixing

  • Cleanroom manufacturing

  • Fume-hood mixing

  • Small-batch process development

  • Other Class I, Division 1 mixing applications

Every hazardous-location application is different. Acuity works with customers to understand the process and determine the appropriate system configuration.

Configured Around Your Application

Hazardous-location mixing equipment is rarely selected from a part number alone.

The appropriate configuration depends on what you’re mixing, where the equipment will be installed, and the requirements of the classified area.

Acuity can work with your engineering, process, EHS, facilities, or project team to define the application and determine the appropriate system configuration.

An Integrated Hazardous-Location Mixing System

The HazLo XP-Rated Stir Plate is designed as a complete system rather than simply a standard stir plate adapted for a hazardous area.

Stainless-Steel Enclosure

A Type 4X stainless-steel enclosure houses the primary electrical and magnetic mixing components.

Purge & Pressurization System

The integrated Type X-Purge system provides protective-gas flow, enclosure pressurization, monitoring, and control.

Intrinsic-Safety Interfaces

Intrinsic-safety barriers provide the appropriate interface between the purge system and associated electrical controls.

Hazardous-Location Electrical Components

Cabling, glands, plug connections, and related components are selected as part of the complete hazardous-location design.

External Controls

Power and mixing speed are controlled externally without opening the protected enclosure.

Grounding & Bonding

Grounding and bonding provisions are incorporated into the system for proper installation within the classified environment.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the hazardous-location rating?

The reference HazLo XP-Rated Stir Plate is designed for:

Class I, Division 1, Group D, T5; Type X-Purge

Final system suitability and installation requirements should be reviewed for the specific application and facility.

What size batches can it mix?

The reference configuration provides magnetic mixing capacity up to 50 liters.

Actual mixing performance depends on the vessel, fluid properties, magnetic coupling, and process conditions.

Can it be used with ethanol?

The original HazLo system was developed for a pharmaceutical process involving aqueous ethanol solutions.

Suitability for a particular ethanol concentration, solvent, or other process material should be evaluated based on the complete application.

What happens if purge pressure is lost?

The system continuously monitors enclosure pressure. If the required purge pressure is lost, electrical power within the protected enclosure is designed to automatically disconnect.

Does it require compressed air?

Yes. The reference configuration uses compressed dry air or another suitable protective gas.

The system requires a minimum available supply of approximately 5 SCFM, with approximately 1.4 SCFM continuous consumption during normal operation.

Is the system available in different configurations?

Yes. The final configuration can depend on the hazardous-area classification, material being processed, mixing requirements, utilities, installation environment, and facility requirements.
